Check for Test Updates

Important Updates Regarding the 2020 Version of the Civics Test

Beginning on April 19, 2021, USCIS is administering only the 2008 civics test to N-400 applicants at their initial interview appointment, regardless of their filing date. USCIS will no longer offer the 2020 civics test at the initial interview, but will continue to provide study materials for the 2020 test for those applicants who are eligible to choose between the 2008 or 2020 civics test at their re-exam or N-336 hearing.

For more information about the 2020 civics test, visit The 2020 Version of the Civics Test page.

On the civics test, some answers may change because of elections or appointments. You must answer the question with the name of the official serving at the time of your naturalization interview. On this page, you can find the answers that may have changed on the civics test for both the 2008 and 2020 versions of the test.

*If you are 65 years old or older and have been a lawful permanent resident of the United States for 20 or more years, you may study just the questions that have been marked with an asterisk found at the end of each question.
